The Chianti Wine CellarThe grand and historical wine cellar Cantina of Monaciano is located next to the main Villa of the Estate and borders the park. The cantina dates back to the 1700s and is still used today for the production of Chianti. It is open to the public and guided visits can be arranged along with wine tastings of fine Tuscan wine. The foundation walls make up a side of the seventeenth century court yard, once served as stables and is decorated with a historical water well positioned atop a tank of rainwater. Upon entering the wine cellar, one is surrounded by a series of archways and vaulted ceilings geometrically diverse one from the other. Antique wooden barrels of various shapes and sizes . This is where Chianti Classico Riserva is produced, obtained by the aging of select grapes from the best vines and prime harvests for a minimum of 24 months in small oak barrels. It is then refined in bottles allowing it to develop its full bouquet and complex earthly flavor unique to Chianti. Adjacent to the immense entry way, a stairway leads further below ground into an even more ancient cellar which ends up under the main Villa unveiling secret passageways. Additionally, the estate also owns a new cantina equipped with more modern machinery for wine production.
